Leicester bricklayer celebrates International success

Local Leicester bricklayer Sam Fairgrieve received an honour from employer Jelson Homes at the company’s annual dinner on Friday, 27th November to mark his achievement as part of the GB WorldSkills squad, which was ranked seventh at the 2009 championships in Calgary in September.

The competition, which draws 900 competitors from 51 countries, pits the cream of the world’s under-21s against one another in a diverse range of fields from bricklaying and carpentry to floristry and beauty therapy. The 2009 championship saw the 26-strong GB squad achieve its highest rank to date, with Sam’s 5th overall place in the bricklaying competition providing much-needed points.

Anne de Vere Hunt, HR Officer at Jelson Homes where Sam, now 21, started his career as an apprentice and now works as a bricklayer, says:
“We’re really proud of Sam – he has great natural ability and real drive, which his outstanding achievement in this competition serves to highlight. He’s a real asset to the Jelson team and has a great future ahead of him.”

When not working on Jelson developments in and around Leicester, Sam is a keen sportsman and has won trophies for Jet-Ski racing, trial biking and mountain biking.
